We are reaching out to you today with heavy hearts, but with a fierce determination to seek justice for Malik Wrightsell.
On a day that should have been filled with joy, laughter, and celebration for his son’s birthday, Malik’s life was completely upended. While putting together a go-cart on the sidewalk for his son, Malik was approached and detained by Chicago Police officers. In the moments that followed, as Malik was running away, he was shot three times—twice in the back and once in the neck. He is incredibly fortunate to be alive, but the physical and emotional trauma of this event will stay with him and his family forever.
Despite the unimaginable pain of his injuries, Malik is now facing an uphill legal battle. He has been charged in connection with the injuries of two CPD officers. However, official press conferences have already acknowledged that friendly fire was involved. Furthermore, it has come to light that the officers' injuries occurred during the struggle, when an officer attempted to snatch a backpack off Malik while he was detained on the ground, causing a weapon in an officer's possession to discharge.
